my guide to Holiday Dressing

The year’s winding down and I’m officially in holiday mode — family time, presents, and yes, parties! To me, holiday dressing isn’t just about following a dress code: it’s one of life’s greatest sartorial pleasures. It’s the perfect excuse to indulge in your most glamorous, main-character fantasies.

I’m all in for what I like to call “Method Dressing” during the holidays. Why? Because there’s nothing quite like going full-on festive — and honestly, the rest of the year hardly offers the right occasions. A red tailored suit, or a red dress (velvet gets the top bonus points), feels perfect whether I’m headed to an office cocktail event or visiting grandmother’s house for dinner. Vogue

But if red isn’t your vibe, I say expand your palette — think red and green, or red and gold, even red and purple. And if you want something a little more traditional yet still fun, a classic tartan plaid (a poufy skirt and a cozy sweater) gives that holiday-cheer look while surviving all the merriment in style.

I’m also a fan of sparkle and texture this time of year. Sequins? Always holiday-appropriate. Whether it’s a matching sequin skirt-and-top set, or a sequin jacket thrown over jeans and pointy boots — it works. And holiday dressing isn’t only about shine: try lace, faux feathers, fringe, ruffles — anything that adds depth and whimsy to your outfit.

Not feeling bold? No problem. Holiday style embraces bold jewel tones too — aquamarine, turquoise, mustards, magenta — colors that remind me of twinkling Christmas lights. If you see it on the lights, it belongs in your wardrobe for the season.

And if you tend toward minimalism, trust me — you don’t have to go full glam. A more subdued holiday look can still feel festive: think elegant tailoring or a simple outfit — but then add one or two statement accessories: lace tights, velvet shoes, maybe a ribbon detail or a standout clutch.

To me, the holidays are all about celebration — with loved ones or just enjoying a cozy night at home. And I believe: even if all you’re doing is curling up on the couch watching your favorite holiday movies, you deserve to dress up a little. Because dressing up is part of the magic.
