THE MET 2026!! Runway Looks That Fit the “Fashion Is Art” Dress Code

The 2026 Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala has officially announced its dress code: “Fashion Is Art.”

This year’s exhibition theme at the Costume Institute is “Costume Art,” focusing on the importance of the dressed body in the museum’s vast collection, as explained by curator Andrew Bolton.

While that might sound conceptual, the dress code gives guests a lot of creative freedom. Designers have been translating art in all its forms into wearable fashion for years — making this theme a rich source of inspiration.

🎨 How Designers and Attendees Might Interpret “Fashion Is Art”

  • Many will look to historical art movements:

    • Rococo, Baroque, and Renaissance are expected to be popular starting points.

  • Modern and contemporary art references are also likely:

    • For example, Yves Saint Laurent’s Mondrian-inspired designs or Loewe’s nod to Ellsworth Kelly.

  • Famous paintings could influence outfits too — think looks inspired by Portrait of Madame X or The Burning June.

  • Some interpretations might be more literal, others abstract — including trompe l’oeil, naked dresses, exaggerated padding, or armor-like silhouettes.
